Chin and Cheek Implants
Are you a candidate for facial augmentation?
A receding chin and a "weak jaw", poor definition between the chin and the neck, and flattening of the cheekbones are the most common reasons patients seek augmentation of the face with implants. These are frequently done with other associated procedures depending on the result desired by the patient. The results are predictable and can restore definition to underdeveloped areas of the face and asymmetry either as a result of heredity or trauma.
Your Initial Consultation
Your doctor will examine and measure you and discuss your concerns and expectations. Your overall facial structure and features are evaluated and considered. Occasionally x-rays may be needed. With chin implants, dental occlusion is evaluated and if this is an issue, orthodontic consultation may be suggested.
Types of Implants
Facial implants are made of solid silicone or a substance resembling a porous synthetic bone. Your doctor will discuss the choice based on your specific needs and other factors. Both types are safe and FDA approved. Both are permanent but removable if change or further enhancement is ever desired.
Implant Surgery
Implants are placed through incisions either inside the mouth or through a small incision in the crease under the chin. Usually this procedure is done in the office under anesthetic with light sedation and is virtually painless. In most cases the patient may return to work or school in 3-5 days. Infection as a complication is extremely rare and easily treatable. In many cases chin implants are often performed with far removal in the neck to improve the result. Both chin and cheek implants can be carried out with face lift procedures to enhance the result.
