Chemical Peel
The use of various applicants to the face to reduce the signs of aging dates to 3000BC in ancient Egypt. The science and art of modern chemical peeling began after WWI with the observation that those men whose faces sustained burns from chemical agents healed with fresh, smooth unblemished skin. Experimentation with various chemicals during this time laid the basis for many of the agents and methods used today.
Phenol with combinations of various additives and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) in varying concentration are most commonly used in "surgical peels" administered only by qualified physicians. With 30 years experience, in our practice we have found that chemical peels in most cases are more effective than laser treatment and less expensive with shorter downtime. These agents properly used, are most effective in the improvement of deep lines around the mouth, fine wrinkles of the eyelids and "crowsfeet" and certain pigmentation and blemishes. I would stress however, that not everyone is a candidate for this type of treatment and all patients should be evaluated on an individual basis for skin type and their expectations for healing time and final results. |
