Breast Augmentation Surgery

CONSIDERING BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY

(Also referred to as Augmentation Mammoplasty and Breast Implants (enlargement)

Are you a Candidate for Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Some of the many reasons our clients choose to have this procedure done include having underdeveloped breasts, to balance a difference in breast size, to correct a reduction in volume following pregnancy or breast feeding, after weight loss, as part of the age related process, or as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery. Whatever your reason may be, breast augmentation can give you a more proportional, youthful figure as a result of enhancing your breast size and shape. Our healthy clients, who come to us with realistic expectations, no matter the age - find the end results are predictable and gratifying. This is due to the state-of-the-art refined techniques we use as well as our many years of combined, cumulative experience.

The initial breast augmentation surgery visit or consultation - An initial consultation with your Doctor is most important and will include a complete breast exam, photographs, medical history and other things considered important in your specific case. Your doctor will consider the size and shape of your breasts, your skin quality, nipple and areola placement, whether or not your breasts are sagging and if you've had previous surgeries and/or biopsies and mammograms results. Family history of breast cancer is important. It is very common for women to have a "breast lift" done at the same time as having implants. This can give more pleasing, long-term results. Don't hesitate to discuss this with us.

Types of breast implants used today include saline (this is a shell filled with salt-water solution) and silicone gel. Both are available without restriction and are FDA approved. Our staff will discuss this with you in detail.

Preparing for your surgery and following your consultation and evaluation, it will be important for you to follow the instructions we will give you regarding use of medications, vitamins and herbs, smoking and diet. Our bodies have an amazing ability to "heal" if we work with them by avoiding certain harmful substances (such as smoking) and by fueling them with nutritious foods.

BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE OVERVIEW

How long does the breast implant surgery take? Where will it be done? and what type of Anesthesia is used?
Your surgery will be performed in a surgical suite on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia. It normally takes from 1-1 ½ hours to complete the procedure after which you will spend about 45 minutes to an hour in our recovery area.

Various breast implant placement options: Above the muscle or below the muscle…

  1. Inserting the implant above the muscle means it will be placed directly under the breast tissue and in front of the chest wall (pectoral) muscle.
  2. Below the muscle involves placing the implant under the breast tissue and beneath the chest wall (pectoral) muscle.

Both of these placements are done by working through the incision and lifting your breast tissue and skin to create a pocket and then placing the implant above the muscle or beneath it. The placement is based on your particular body build and specific needs.

AFTER BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY

Immediately after Surgery you will be well cared for by one of our nurses in a recovery area until time to release you. You will experience moderate discomfort for which you will be given pain medication. There will be some discomfort and soreness for several days - but this can be controlled with medication and does go away. Most of our patients are up and about in a day or two. Discoloration and swelling will disappear gradually - usually within 3-4 weeks, and you should be able to return to work within a few days. The Doctor will have you wear a surgical bra for a prescribed period of time and will discuss bathing, activity, medications and diet with you.

Recovery: We will want you to start walking soon after your procedure. You should begin to feel better in a couple of days and be back to work within a few days. You will need to avoid strenuous activity for about a month until your body completely heals.
